The Weekend Warrior: Common Lower Extremity Injuries
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Identify common lower extremity injuries experienced by adult “weekend warrior athletes” in a variety of sports.
- Review the AAOS Clinical Practice guidelines for the evaluation and management of the acute Achilles tendon rupture.
- Differentiate injuries of the knee utilizing physical exam skills, appropriate exam tests & imaging.
- Compare clinical guidelines peer reviews of the non-operative versus operative management of the meniscal injury in physically active adults
The Weekend Warrior: Common Upper Extremity Injuries
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Identify common upper extremity injuries experienced by adult “weekend warrior athletes” in a variety of sports.
- Review the AAOS Clinical Practice guidelines for the evaluation and management of acute proximal and distal biceps tendon ruptures.
- Differentiate injuries of the upper extremity utilizing physical exam skills, appropriate tests & imaging.
- Recommend rehabilitation and preventive exercises for the adult athlete participating in recreational activities that require repetitive use of the shoulder and elbow.
My “Hip” Hurts
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Review basic x-ray interpretation of bones and joints utilizing the Rule of Two guidelines.
- Evaluate potential etiologies of hip pain in adolescent and adult athletes.
- Evaluate potential etiologies hip/groin pain in female athletes when x-ray imaging is normal.
- Recommend potential non-operative strategies that may be employed to assist the athlete in return-to-sport after evaluation for “hip” pain.
- Utilize guidelines regarding return-to-school and return-to-play for student athletes diagnosed with a concussion as recommended by the most recent International Consensus guideline.
Ankle Sprain: Evaluation and Management
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Consider the use of the Ottawa Ankle Rules to determine if an x-ray is necessary after acute ankle injury
- Perform a competent ankle examination in a patient with ankle pain
- Develop strategies to treat the athlete with a lateral ankle sprain
- Differentiate between a lateral ankle sprain and a high ankle sprain
- Distinguish the differential diagnosis of ankle pain after acute injury
Cardiovascular Disease in the Athlete
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Differentiate Athletic Heart Syndrome from significant cardiovascular disease, such as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in young athletes
- Review the causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes
- Employ the AHA/ACC Scientific Statement on Eligibility and disqualification of athletes with cardiac abnormalities
