Concussions in Sports: What is New, What is Old?
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Incorporate guidelines for the evaluation of a concussion, both on the playing surface and in the office, in youth, adolescent & adult athletes utilizing the CDC Head Up guideline, and common tools such as SCATS & some of the computerized testing tools.
- Review the Berlin 2016 5th Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport and
- information from the 6th International Conference in Concussion in Sport Amsterdam
- 2022 meeting.
- Determine the role of vestibular/ocular testing in the acute & office evaluation of a concussed athlete, understanding its potential role in rehabilitation.
- Review guidelines regarding return-to-school and return-to-play for student athletes diagnosed with a concussion as recommended by the most recent International Consensus guideline.
School is Closed; Sports are Cancelled-The Impact on the Health of Adolescent Athletes during the Pandemic: (Pre and Post Pandemic Psychology in High School Athletes)
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Assess the mental health of adolescents at the onset of the pandemic utilizing the GAD-7 and evaluation of quality-of-life scores from published studies.
- Consider the change in physical activity of adolescent athletes during the pandemic
- Evaluate recommendations for caring for the mental & physical health of athletes post-pandemic as per CDC, NCAA & NFHS guidelines.
Shoulder Pain and Stability
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Review the anatomy of the shoulder and how that anatomy contributes to intrinsic instability.
- Identify the symptoms and exam findings associated with pathologic conditions involving dynamic and static stabilizers.
Orthotics and Shoe Wear 101
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Review basic foot anatomy as it contributes to the shape of the foot.
- Determine the various conditions that cause overpronation.
- Prescribe appropriate shoes according to the foot shape and participating sport.
- Appropriately prescribe orthotics for management of overpronation.
Mechanics and Health of Ankles and Feet
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize key gait and fooUankle biomechanical patterns that contribute to common lower-extremity conditions.
- Identify forefoot and rearfoot alignment issues and understand their impact on overall lower-extremity function.
- Differentiate common foot and ankle diagnoses using practical, clinically focused evaluation strategies.
- Implement management approaches that address muscular balance, stability, and functional foot mechanics.
