Contemporary Issues in End-of-Life Care
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Develop a practical approach to assessment of the whole patient in a hospice setting.
- Formulate effective approaches to common physical symptoms in the terminally ill.
- Integrate effective clinical care of patients and their families in the last days of life based on current evidence based literature, Guidelines and recommendations of the American Geriatrics Society and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
Let’s Use Our Heads: Head Trauma
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
- Apply a decision rule generated from a multi-center study to manage head-injured children.
- Manage children who have sustained concussions and apply guidelines from the International Conference on Concussions and other recent publications.
- Utilize imaging studies appropriately in the evaluation of head-injured children.
The Eyes Have It: The Red-Hot Eye
- Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Demonstrate the six-point eye examination and summarize what clinical conditions may be identified by each step in the examination.
- Treat eye pathology resulting from infection or trauma and relate examples of when to refer a child to an ophthalmologist.
- Summarize the differences between sinusitis with inflammatory edema, peri-orbital cellulitis, and orbital cellulitis.
Sensible Prescribing Practices for the Elderly
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Consider the limits of published trials studies on drug safety and efficacy for seniors.
- Assess the subtle but significant drug side effects in the elderly.
- Distinguish undesirable prescribing practices and employ better approaches based on current evidence-based referenced literature.
Assessing Decision-Making Capacity and Falls in Seniors
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Review the meaning and utility of various estate planning documents important to the elderly population
- Assess the elements of intact vs impaired decision-making capacity
- Determine the proper approach to assessing an older adult’s capacity to make certain decisions
- Determine the proper approach to assessing an older adult who has recently fallen
- Applying the many potentially reversible factors that may have played a role in the fall
