Don’t worry about finding more time in your already busy life for a family vacation. With mornings-only schedules and convenient locations, you’ll have a lot of time to spend with your loved ones.
6 Things to Do With Family in Sarasota
While Sarasota has plenty of activities, why not get a head start on planning your itinerary? Here are six Sarasota attractions for families of all ages:
1. Mote Science Education Aquarium
Whether you want to beat the heat or explore the underwater world, Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA) is the place to do it. With exhibits showcasing a wide variety of aquatic life from around the world, kids and parents alike will be amazed by everything they spot.
Mote also offers a virtual reality experience that takes you “underwater” without getting wet. When you’re done, head to the on-site cafe for a locally-sourced bite or try the Hurricane Simulator.
2. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
Escape into the wonderful world of plants at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota. Check out the banyan grove or meet new friends in the butterfly garden. Then head to the tropical conservatory or take a stroll on the boardwalk path, and don’t forget to stop by the Children’s Garden before you leave.
And if you’re looking for more, you’re in luck: the Historic Spanish Point campus is only a few miles away and offers another 30 acres to explore!
3. Myakka River State Park
Stop by one of Florida’s oldest (and largest) state parks to take in the Myakka River. Hit a trail for hiking or biking, or try the Birdwalk and Canopy Walkways for stunning views.
Then, head to the water for fishing or boating while you take in the natural beauty around you.
4. The Bay
If you’re heading downtown, stop by The Bay, a large greenspace with activities for families with kids of all ages. Your crew will never get bored when you’ve got so much to choose from:
- Movie screenings
- Picnic areas
- Playgrounds
- Live music
- Walking paths
- Kayak rentals
- Dining options
So whether you want to relax by the shoreline or let the kids burn off energy at the playground, The Bay is the place to be in downtown Sarasota.
5. Beach Day
While relaxing at the beach may not be a requirement for a trip to Florida’s Gulf coast, it is a pretty popular activity. Luckily, Sarasota is home to numerous family-friendly beaches, including:
- Siesta Key Beach: Siesta Key has consistently been ranked as one of the top beaches in the United States. Stick your toes in the sand while the kids splash in the water, or hop on a boat tour. A trolley runs to and from downtown to make getting around a breeze.
- Nokomis Beach: As Sarasota County’s oldest public beach, Nokomis has many activities for families. Take a dip in the ocean, followed by a picnic and some time at the playground. For older kids and teens, try walking the boardwalk, kayaking, or watching for dolphins and manatees.
- Venice Beach: Want to get out of town and hit another destination? Drive to Venice Beach, known for shark-tooth and fossil hunting. Check out the fishing pier and nearby Venetian Waterway Park while you’re there.
6. Crowley Museum and Nature Center
For a more educational experience, visit the Crowley Museum and Nature Center. With a museum, pioneer village, and working sugar cane mill, there is plenty for you and your family to explore.
You can also walk the nature trail, peer out from the observation tower, and enjoy the interactive Children’s Discovery Path.
